DORCHESTER NORTH BURYING GROUND / CONTEXT

OPEN UPHAMS seeks to unlock Dorchester North Burying Ground's unique community space for social and cultural growth in and around the Uphams Corner neighborhood.  We advocate for DNBG to become a community platform that unites Uphams Corners' myriad cultures, as well as, diverse generational and socioeconomic groups.  By making Dorchester North Burying Ground more accessible, OPEN UPHAMS believes its intriguing stories may begin to be shared with a broader audience; thereby, revealing unknown commonalities and celebrating cherished uniqueness through the neighborhood’s past and present.

Dorchester North Burying Ground is said to be the second oldest cemetery in the United States, established in 1634.  It is a public open space, owned and maintained by the City of Boston's Parks & Recreation Department in Massachusetts.  Currently, DNBG is locked and virtually invisible to the community that surrounds it.
